Saturday morning I read mainly in the psalms and it was so beautiful. The author repeated in multiple chapters that ALL creation should praise God. The leaves, the insects, the trees, the mountains, everything that has breath should praise the LORD. It is an incredible picture of Romans 8 when it says that all creation waits in agony for the Lord. Every living, breathing thing is called to sing praises to the Lord even as we grow old and decay.
I looked to my left at the verse, "Every thing that has breath praise the Lord" and a flower opened a little wider than it was a second before. And the Lord said, "I am and I see you". I mean, when i'm praising the Lord, he sees me, and when I'm frustrated, angry, and sinning, he sees me too. Needless to say, I have been more aware of my thoughts and decisions since Saturday morning!
After I read my bible, each of the past 4 days I've been here, I have read from a book called Radical by David Platt. Have you heard of it? If not, I encourage every person to get out there and read it immediately. It's a powerful book about how we should be living radically for Christ. I would list the 50 quotes I've written down from the book, but it would take away from you reading it yourself. Seriously, go get it and read it.
So one thing I'm not at all used to yet is the amount of bugs in Africa. I mean, they are everywhere. And if you don't know, I have a phobia for spiders. Well, the other night I went in to bed and one was on my wall. Not a teeny tiny one, but a long black one. Unfortunately, Erin and I both couldn't get him so I had to sleep in fear that it would chew its way through the mosquito net and attack me. The next day, every time I walked in my room I would hesitate and look on the wall. Finally the horrible creature was sitting on my wall again. I called Erin and we decided to double team him... that way he wouldn't know what was coming. Erin stood up on the stool and threw the flip flop at it... great shot, but it didn't move him much. Then I threw the other flip flop at him, and we still didn't get him to move. Finally, the third throw did it... he scattered across the wall sooo fast and all I remember is Erin shoving the stool out of the way, yelling (ok not really yelling) for me to hand her the other flip flop and her diving for the kill. Then, we did a victory dance, laughing, shouting and dancing. It was hilarious. And number one on our infinite list of spiders in Africa... Whew. Needless to say, I slept Saturday night. :)
